For tens of thousands of years, message sticks were commonly used by First Nations peoples as a way of communicating between different groups.

Messages were painted, carved or burned onto a stick, using symbols and imagery, and the message stick was transported by hand across long distances to the intended recipients. The messages would usually be announcements of ceremonies, invitations, warnings and other events.
